Casabella no. 339/340, August/September, Milan
Eschewing a limited definition of “arredo urbano” [“urban decoration”], Casabella no. 339/340, was an open survey of the many elements which concur in creating the landscape of the city. Perceptual, functional and social aspects, rights and duties of the community and the individuals, advertising, urban structures, typologies of decoration, plastic aspects, dwellings, traffic and communications were some of the topics of an issue already defined by the heterodox approach of the editor Alessandro Mendini, who would be appointed director of the magazine in two months. The elephant on the cover advancing toward the Guggenheim museum illustrates the fate of the masters in forthcoming issues and the substitution of buildings for other forms of practice. UG
